Bank Indonesia in Surakarta was originally one of the bank offices of De Javasche Bank, established in the inland region of Central Java. It was initially located in the residence of Mrs. De Kock van Leeuwen.
The decision to establish the branch came after the President of De Javasche Bank visited the Solo area. C.F.W. van Kerchem then recommended the idea to the Board of Directors in Batavia. The growth of the economy in the Vorstenlanden region—an area designated for plantations—became a major reason to open this branch in Solo. chat, the rise of batik merchants in Solo also played a significant role in the region’s economic development.
On November 10, 1908, the current building was commissioned to the architectural firm NV. Architecten en Ingenieursbureau Hulswitt en Fermont Weltevreden en Ed. Cuypers Amsterdam, and it was completed on August 1, 1910, with the form still visible today.

Throughout its history, De Javasche Bank experienced several financial crises that impacted the economy of the Dutch East Indies:
•    1887: Crisis caused by the bankruptcy of Dorrepaal & Co.
•    1914–1919: Crisis due to World War I and a plague outbreak in Solo
•    1921: Crisis caused by the bankruptcy and fraud of a Chinese entrepreneur named Tjiook Kee Siang, who manipulated collateral procedures, causing losses to creditors

However, these crises had little to no impact on Chinese and native Javanese entrepreneurs.
In 1942, during the Japanese occupation of Indonesia, the banking system—including De Javasche Bank—underwent drastic changes. The bank was closed, and its operations were replaced by a new institution called Nanpo Kaihatsu Ginko. All of De Javasche Bank’s assets were handed over to the Japanese authorities. One of Nanpo Kaihatsu Ginko’s first actions was to issue new currency featuring the character Gatotkaca.

Following Japan's defeat in World War II, the status of De Javasche Bank also shifted. On June 19, 1951, the government of the Republic of Indonesia formed the Committee for the Nationalization of De Javasche Bank, which was officially enacted on July 2, 1951. The Indonesian government successfully acquired 97% of the bank's shares on the Dutch stock exchange. Eventually, on July 1, 1953, Bank Indonesia was officially established as the central bank of the Republic of Indonesia, replacing De Javasche Bank.
